Autism Spectrum Disorder

Medicinal cannabis has been shown to assist with the anxiety and/or behavioural symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

ASD patients suffer from varying levels of symptom severity. While no 2 ASD patients are exactly alike, they typically lack the ability to fully interact with their environment and those around them. As debilitating as this can be, there are no specific medical disease complications linked to ASD, and patients suffering from ASD have a normal life expectancy. However, these patients do have an elevated risk of suffering injury resulting from associated behaviours/outbursts.

Conditions classified under autism spectrum disorder include:

  • Autism
  • Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)

Causes / Predispositions

There is no known cause for ASD, nor is there a medical test for the diagnosis of ASD. It is believed to be a neuro-developmental disability with possible genetic and/or neurological causes. Males are nearly 3 times more likely to be affected by ASD, along with approximately 1% of the overall school-age population.

02

Symptoms

There is a range of behaviours commonly linked with autism, such as:

  • Difficulty Communicating/Interacting with Others
  • Repetitive Behaviours/Movements
  • Preference for Routine
  • Unusual Reactions to Stimuli

Patients are generally diagnosed during early stages of childhood (as early as age 2), however it is not uncommon for adults to be diagnosed with ASD often having been misdiagnosed with a differing mental health issue. ASD patients are diagnosed through the observations of a variety of health care providers including paediatricians, psychologists, psychiatrists and speech pathologists.

Traditional Treatments

While not all, some patients suffering from ASD may require full-time care and/or assistance with the activities of daily living. Currently there are medications specifically tailored to treat ASD patients. However, there are medications used in the treatment of mental health issues that can help control the associated symptoms of anxiety and/or behavioural issues.

Additional multidisciplinary treatments include:

  • Psychological Support
  • Speech Pathology
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Support/Education Services for Family Members Providing Care.

  • Inhalation via Vaporizer – Useful in achieving immediate relief due to fast onset.

Recommended Product Formulations

  • Products containing only CBD.
  • Products containing THC and CBD in equal ratios.

Notable Terpenes

  • Myrcene – Analgesic, Muscle Relaxant
  • Caryophyllene – Anti-anxiety, Analgesic
