Causes / Predispositions
Neuropathic pain does not always have a clear cause. Factors that can contribute to neuropathic pain include:
- Nerve Damage Resulting from Prior Injury
- Nerve Damage Resulting from Surgery
- Diabetic Neuropathy
- Multiple sclerosis
- Cancer
- Chemotherapy
- Stroke
- Amputation (Phantom Limb)
- Infection (Shingles, HIV)
- Alcoholism
Symptoms
Patients with neuropathic pain may experience persistent or episodic sensations of burning, tingling, sharp, or stabbing/shooting pain.
Neuropathic pain can also result in:
- Increased Pain Sensitivity (Hyperalgesia)
- Increased Perception of Pain Severity (Allodynia)
- Sleep Disturbance
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Difficulty Performing Activities of Daily Life
Traditional Treatments
Treatment of neuropathic pain is often individualized to a patient’s specific symptoms.

- Gabapentin
- Pregabalin
- Anti-Seizure (Carbamazepine, Valproate)
- Antidepressants (Amitriptyline, Duloxetine)
- Analgesic/Anti-Inflammatory (Opioids, NSAIDs, Paracetamol)
Additional Treatments
- Physiotherapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
- Relaxation/Meditation Techniques
- Injections
- Surgery
- Acupuncture
- Devices that Affect Nerve Signals
Treatment with Cannabis Medicine
The endocannabinoid system plays a role in the body’s pain signalling process, and research indicates that cannabis can suppress pain signaling by activating the CB1 receptors. Studies involving patients suffering from neuropathic pain have found that using a combination of THC and CBD can cause a significant reduction of pain symptoms as well as improved sleep quality.
Additional research is needed to fully understand the potentials and possible side effects of cannabis medicine as a treatment for neuropathic pain.
