The endocannabinoid system is a complex system of neurotransmitters that exists in humans and many animals. It is composed of cannabinoid receptors which interact with cannabinoids to produce different effects in the body and mind. The body produces its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids, which interact with the endocannabinoid system to perform several homeostatic functions which affect appetite, pain-sensation, mood, memory, and cognitive function. Cannabinoids are also present in the cannabis plant (called phytocannabinoids), which, when introduced to the body, interact with the endocannabinoid system, being able to affect the same bodily and cognitive functions.
