Cannabis strains are genetic variants of the cannabis plant that portray special characteristics that make them unique and different from each other. Thousands of cannabis strains exist today, which have been developed by the process of selective breeding. Breeders develop new cannabis strains in order to obtain different results from the cannabis plant. These results can be associated with cultivation (for example, creating plants that yield more flowers), or they can be associated to the plant’s therapeutic effects. Different strains carry different levels of cannabinoids and terpenes, which is why they are used for different purposes in the field of cannabis medicine.
