Terpenes

Terpenes are aromatically-rich organic chemical compounds that can be found in a wide variety of plants, flowers, and vegetables. Terpenes are widely used in perfume-making and traditional medicine, and constitute the active ingredients in essential oils. A large number of terpenes can be found in the cannabis plant and they’re the compounds responsible for giving cannabis strains their distinctive aromas. Since terpenes are produced by the same glands that make cannabinoids like THC and CBD, they’re present in most cannabis extracts. Terpenes are believed to form a synergistic effect when introduced in the body along with cannabinoids, by a proposed principle called the “entourage effect.” Vast evidence is also leading scientists to believe that terpenes have therapeutic effects on their own, and their presence in cannabis products greatly modifies the effect cannabis has on the consumer.
